Chapter 26

They started to make their way downstairs, hand in hand, when Emory’s phone rang.

“It’s in the bedroom,” she said, turning back for the door. “I’ll meet you downstairs in a minute.”

“Don’t be long. I’ll have coffee waiting for you. Hazelnut or french vanilla?”

“Hazelnut. Make sure it’s strong,” she requested over her shoulder.

Chase’s footsteps reverberated as he went down the stairs as Emory reached her phone on the bedside table where it’d been charging.

“Hello?”

“Emory, I’ve got a favor to ask.”

Stacey. The preppy little twit sounded almost perky, most unlike her usual moody self.

“What’s up,” Em said, cautiously.

“I have a big date Saturday evening and we are supposed to work. I know I usually work until 9, but will you come in at 7 instead that morning? My hairdresser could only work me in at 9:30 and there’s no way I can make it to Fayetteville in that short amount of time.”

“Um...sure.”

“Thanks.”

Before Emory could respond further, Stacey hung up. She looked at the phone for a minute trying to figure out what just happened. Never in the three years she’d worked there and with Stacey, had she ever asked her for a single thing. Usually she’d gone to some other nurse, one of her clique, and worked something out. Why now had she come to her instead?

Emory shrugged, figuring this was just another one of life’s many mysteries. Speaking of mysteries, a man who seemed to actually adore her was downstairs with coffee waiting for her.

Without another glance, she walked down the stairs. As she turned to walk down the hall leading to the kitchen, the sound of shattering glass filled her ears. Unsure of what was happening, she stopped in her tracks, waiting for something to give her an idea.

Chase flew out of the kitchen and towards her. The look of his face said he was both worried and ready for battle. He looked fierce when he gazed at the broken bay window by the front door.

Emory finally turned around to see what he was going on about. He hand flew to her mouth, astonished at the damage. Glass shards were everywhere. Pieces of the window frame stuck out in odd ways as if waiting for the glass to reverse itself back into position. There was definitely no hope of that happening.

“What the…” The words broke off as she tried to take it all in. Obviously Chase had a much better grasp on the situation.

“Did you see anyone?” His eyes darted around, looking for the assailant.

“What?”

Chase turned and looked sharply at her. His eyes searched her up and down, landing on the spots of blood on the hardwood floor. He hurried to her side. “Where are you cut?”

“Cut?”

“Emory, sweetheart, I need you to tell me where you’re cut.”

The endearment seemed to pull her out of the nightmare she was standing in. “My foot hurts,” she said finally, internally assessing herself.

Chase scooped her into his arms and carried her to the stairs. Sitting her down, he moved to her feet and checked both.
